Definitions

In each species (bovine, ovine, etc.), the animals presenting the same phenotypic characteristics (constant and hereditary external traits: coat, horns) constitute a breed. All these traits, often called breed standards, are established by the breed’s genealogical book. Only the animals that are considered conforming to the standard by a commission of experts can be recorded in the genealogical book of each breed. To go a little further: The French decree of July 17, 2018 established the list of bovine, ovine, goat and pig species recognizing, specifying the zoo-genetic resources presenting an interest for the preservation of the herd or flock’s genetic heritage and for regional development.
